The 2nd West India Regiment were involved in the Benin expedition to Akassa in 1897 and also helped to occupy the hinterland of Gold Coast and Lagos as a result of French aggression. In 1898 two companies proceeded to Kumassi.

The poem was published anonymously but is generally attributed to Sir Charles D’Oyly, who served in the East India Company.

1805 (20 Dec) EL from Brigadier General Thomas Picton in London to General Maitland, Governor of Grenada. Carried 'by favour' by an army captain travelling to Barbados on H.M.S. Illustrious and then put in the post. Fine s/l 'BARBADOES,' rated 4d. Fine. 3pp letter. Picton who had been the first governor of Trinidad was then in London facing charges of cruelty and torture of a free mulatto girl, Luisa Calderón committed while in office.
