1836 (5 July) EL written by George Combe in Edinburgh to his father in London endorsed 'per Steam Boat.' Oval crown SHIP LETTER LONDON ds in red, PAID AT EDINBURGH cds and London 'G.P.' h/s. Rated only 8d instead of 1/2½ if sent per mailcoach. Long letter re a letter he had recently had published. George Combe was a Scottish lawyer and the leader of the phrenological movement for more than twenty years. He founded the Edinburgh Phrenological Society in 1820 and was the author of the highly influential The Constitution of Man (1828).
