Small mourning envelope to Thomas Warr on H.M.S. Alert, a wooden screw sloop, franked 6d, the special officers rate. London cds b/stamp. Fine.
The ships log gives her location as Tabago, Panama Bay throughout January and February. This letter probably travelled per RMS Colon and then by rail across the Isthus.

GB 3d plate 16 tied by fine BATH duplex. San Francisco Paid All cds in red at left and Liverpool cds b/stamp. Addressed to Commander Cookson, H.M.S. Peterel, care of British Consul, San Francisco. Fine.
When this letter reached San Francisco HMS Peterel was at Acapulco, Mexico and then 3 days later left for Panama. The consul, who was also the British Post Office Agent would have forwarded the letter per closed bag to Panama. Ex Harper.

with pair of 6ds (plate 14) tied by Charing Cross duplexes. On reverse London and Devonport cds. Small opening tears.
The British Consul in Panama also acted as the British Post Office Agent. This letter was sent on RMS Para arriving in Colon on the 24th and Panama two days later. HMS Peterel was then at Coquimbo, Chili, preparing to return to England. It is evident that the Consul, having been informed of the route planned for the Peterel, re-addressed this letter for Devonport and sent it to London per Diplomatic Bag. Ex Osborn.

Franked with 1/- (plate 12) and 6d (plate 15) tied by Loughborough duplex cancels. Roughly opened and restored, still attractive.
A non concessional but notified Officers letter rate appearing in the P.O. guides for 1871 and 1872, para 136, viz. Letters addressed to Ships of War on the Pacific Station (North or South) are subject to a postage charge of 1/6 per oz. This letter left Southampton on May 2 in RMS Moselle due at Colon on May 24. Repulse was at Tabago when the mail arrived after crossing the Isthmus.
