written by Lt. William Armytage, R.N. serving on H.M.S. Vesuvius (a 4 gun wooden paddle sloop)in Bermuda. Rated 1/- and with London and Banbury cds b/stamps. Fine.
The absense of any Bermuda postmark indicates that the ships bag containing the letter was delivered directly to the Velocity, the contract mail boat, which sailed on May 7 for Halifax. There it was transferred to Cunards America on May 13. Ex Osborn.
